SGS is one of the few technical firms in the Eastern Africa equipped with the necessary experience and knowhow to help provide concept development, planning, designing and building of large fibre optic infrastructure projects. We have been part of regional strategic projects, and on the ground, working with local clients. With a foot in the ground in Somalia and the Horn of Africa region, we see ourselves best placed to assess the opportunities and the challenges of local project.
SGS is currently involved in a ground breaking project in the region and has over the years, worked in both sides of the spectrum – from the clients’ side in the development of business plans to the contractor’s side in successfully delivering lasting solutions.
At SGS we have a highly experienced team facilitating all regulatory permits and licenses from the relevant authorities in the various regional administrations. We have the experience of working in the most challenging situations to deliver tangible results.
From Permits in Principle and Operational permits at survey and installation stages to Environmental, Fisheries and Principal permits, we at SGS are able to deliver the required documentations on time as well as assisting the main contractor in fulfilling the permit conditions set by different authorities.
The DTS is vital for the initial planning phase of a terrestrial (and submarine) cable systems. At SGS we have a solid experienced team who can execute proper DTS which can provide the technical references that might be required for the life of the cable system.
Our cable route survey teams have years of experience in planning and laying terrestrial fibre optic cables in the Eastern Africa region. Over the years we have been involved in some of the largest of terrestrial fibre optic cables in the region and as a result have the necessary local information required to continuously improve and build even better networks.
SGS provides a complete range of Cable Landing Station (CLS) site survey and installation services. Usually the CLS site survey is initiated at the start of the project and it is conducted at a designated site for cable landing. At the end of the survey, a full report is produced to provide all the necessary information parameters from the site where the system will be landed. This report is critical both for the initial planning and for the system deployments towards the end of the project.
For installation services however, our focus is to deploy systems either as ‘pre-configured’ or on-site installations by fully certified installation team. We work with global submarine cable solutions providers to train specially selected team and certify them during the project in order to successfully deploy the system at the cable landing site.
Towards the end of the project and as part of the final tasks, our teams are trained to facilitate the necessary handover to local customers for smooth transition and successful completion of the project.
The initial planning phase for any terrestrial or submarine cable systems is the Cable Route Desktop Studies (DTS). This work provides sufficient details of all the factors that can influence the route of the cable. The DTS work provides a key technical references for the project, something that will be useful through the lifetime of the cable system. This is an area of expertise that we have at SGS and can offer the required services as necessary.
Within our teams we have experienced Project Managers and Technical Leads who have longstanding experience in leading large terrestrial fibre optic cable networks in the region.
